I've gotten to go over to the cabin once...on the way over I took a few pictures of a Hawk...I sent the picture out to a few people and got some different answers, then I opened up my Sibley Field Guide and just really thought that this was for sure an immature Red Tail....I finally sent out an email to Jeff Harding, an experienced Oregon Birder...this was his answer....
Yvonne,
This is certainly a Buteo (the group including Red-tailed Hawks), not a falcon or accipiter such as a Cooper’s Hawk. Buteos can be difficult though, especially juveniles. The in-flight photo shows the hawk with long, narrow wings, like a Swainson’s Hawk, but the light patch on the end of the wings is a field mark for juvenile Red-tailed Hawks. The perched bird is pretty clearly a young Red-tailed Hawk, with the streaked belly and light chest, so I think you are right, that it is a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk.
Nice photos – thanks for sending them along.
Good Birding,
Jeff
so I'm really missing the cabin and want to get back to my new loom...I started a new saddle blanket a few visits ago, but really need to spend a bunch of time and just get my head into it!
...this is a stand of Aspen near the cabin....there are beautiful stands of Aspen all over the Fort Klamath and Chiloquin area.
