A few months ago, I decided I wanted to really do a bit more knitting, and I wanted to make Ear Flapper Hats. I researched patterns on the internet, and emailed friends who had made them. One of my friends had sent me one last year, and it is an incredible hat, with tons of color (yarn) changes....way over my comfort level....I just wanted to start with something SIMPLE!!! So I got a free pattern off the internet. One of my other girlfriends and I made our hats....we followed the pattern exactly....We both decided that after our hats were done and washed that they fit a little bit too snugly! So......We talked and she helped me add 4 more stitches to the pattern.....that was MUCH better.....but then....I liked the ear flaps shorter, like in the original hat I'd gotten from my girlfriend last year....so.....we changed the pattern yet again!!!! Hey....it's WAY awesome now.....check out the 3 hats below.....Right now I'm spinning wool to knit another 'ear flapper' hat....in browns and pink....
First Hat with Original FREE pattern gotten off the Internet! I used commercial worsted wool in colors, Dark Brown, Cream and Grey.
Here is the 2nd hat I knit, using Single Ply Lopi weight yarn....the colors don't look right, but the bottom is a dark forest green, the middle part is Grey and the upper part is a dark green with a bluish tone to it, with little chicken beak looking gold colored yarn additions.
Here is the last hat I knit....I've shortened up the ear flaps and they're perfect now...The yarn was spun from roving hand dyed by my girlfriend Cindie....check out her Blog! http://eweniquelyewe.blogspot.com/The white yarn is some that I spun from a blended batt I made of soy silk, qiviut, pygora and angora, then there is a little waste yarn, that I had saved from an earlier skein of wool that is the blue /green at the top and also a little carmel colored waste wool from a skein of camel....hah! so you see it's a pretty diverse fibered hat....One that I could have never knit myself without the guiding help of my friend Cindie!!!! I also want to thank Lynne up in B.C. for being the instigator of this whole project by sending me one of her gorgeous knit ear flapper hats....She is known as the Socklady....check out her blog too!!!!
So Best of all this hat is going up to Washington State to one of my oldest and dearest friends Nancy.....She and I go way back....maybe when we were 4 or 5 years old, and lived across the street from each other in Oak Grove, Oregon....we got back in touch with each other this summer, and I'm really blessed to have found her again!
Darn, makes me think you know what you are doing. Nice work.
